It’s an old story. A campaign trying to hide their true purpose (in this case an attempt to stop one buildingby creating a ban on all housing in Los Angeles) just makes up facts and hopes the voters swallow them.
We’re not going to let that happen. Jill Stewart and her campaign for the Housing Ban throw around all kinds of unsourced lies, and we’re going to dispel them with the truth, immediately.
As they happen, we’ll send you these truth squad updates. Here’s the first:
THEY SAY: Their initiative enacts a harmless two-year “timeout” on construction and would only affect 5 percent or less of projects.
THE TRUTH: The Housing Ban would stop virtually all major housing projects in Los Angeles for at least two years and make it almost impossible to build anything else after that. Their misleading 5 percent number includes all permits, like new toilets and repairs to existing houses. In fact, the majority of new, multi-family housing would be prohibited under their law.
THE FACTS:
- New studies out of Harvard show Los Angeles needs to build 382,000 new units just to meet current demand. If the Neighborhood Integrity Initiative passes, it will make it virtually impossible to build those units. 1
- Homeless advocates like the Inner City Law Center point out that most new homeless are a result of skyrocketing rents and lack of available housing units. The Neighborhood Integrity Initiative will restrict housing even more, driving homeless numbers up and pushing families onto the streets. 2
- The Southern California Association of Governments predicts L.A.’s population will increase by 500,000 over the next two decades, adding a city the size of Long Beach to our already impacted housing market. The Neighborhood Integrity Initiative will make it impossible to meet that demand, driving up demand and rents. 3
