Many thanks to the South Bay Association of Chambers for generously sponsoring the August Board Meeting and thank you to the Torrance Area Chamber of Commerce for hosting us! Since this was the first Board meeting after returning from our month off in July, we addressed a number of hot issues. See below for the details!
NASA Columbia River Pipeline Study
BizFed supports the NASA Columbia River Pipeline Study, and has requested a $5 million appropriation for NASA/JPL to determine the feasibility for a new pipeline to convey fresh water from the Columbia River to California. The BizFed Board voted to send a letter to Congresswoman Mimi Walters and Governor Jerry Brown urging them to appropriate funding.
BizFed joins “Fix Our Roads” coalition The League of California Cities, California Alliance for Jobs, and the California State Association of Counties are funding a broad coalition of transportation and business groups calling themselves the “Fix Our Roads” coalition. The coalition has adopted a set of transportation principles to guide the Legislature and the Governor during the 2015 special session on Transportation. The BizFed board voted to join this coalition. |

BizFed supports AB 313 (Atkins) on enhanced infrastructure financing districts AB 313 (Atkins) provides much needed clarifications for practical and efficient local implementation of Enhanced Infrastructure Financing Districts (EIFD’s). AB 313 would help facilitate the use of EIFD’s by tasking a Public Financing Authority (instead of participating legislative bodies) with preparing and adopting the Infrastructure Financing Plan. AB 313 is vital to communities across California at a critical time with the 2011 elimination of California’s redevelopment program and the decline in federal infrastructure funding. |

BizFed will engage with county stakeholders on Medicine Takeback Program Los Angeles County is exploring the creation of a mandatory pharmaceutical and over-the-counter medicine take-back program. BizFed will work with the LA County Board of Supervisors, Department of Public Works, and Sheriff’s Department as they create a task force of effected stakeholders to determine the best model to achieve the County’s goals before directing County Counsel to draft an ordinance to create a mandatory take-back program paid for entirely by the pharmaceutical and over-the-counter medicine industries. |

BizFed supports the NRG Puente Power Project
The Puente Power Project is the result of NRG’s winning bid in the 2014 RFO (request for offers) from Southern California Edison. In that, the California Public Utilities Commission directed the utility to procure up to 300 MW of local power generation in the Oxnard/Ventura region in anticipation of the retirement of two aging NRG power plants in Oxnard. The BizFed Board moved to support a call-in voice of support and a formal letter of support during the California Energy Commission’s public comment period.
