HERE’S WHAT THE BIZFED BOARD DECIDED IN OCTOBER

Many thanks to our September Board Meeting host Port of Los Angeles!

Showing Port Unity

Our Meet and Greet with Mario Cordero, Executive Director of the Port of Long Beach, was not only informative but captivating. Mario stressed the vital role both the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles have on the nation’s economy. Did you know that between both the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles, 17.5 Million cargo containers passed through in Fiscal Year 2017? In the spirit of port unity, the Honorable Lucia Moreno-Linares, LA Harbor Commissioner followed Mario Cordero in applauding the goods movement between both ports. They are both Force Multipliers!

Oppose “Right to Counsel” in LA City

The City of Los Angeles passed a motion to draft an ordinance that would provide attorneys to tenants to defend against all types of evictions, including non-payment of rent. An ordinance like this will do great harm to smaller property owners who already have a thin operational margin to maintain their properties and keep rent affordable for working families. This potential ordinance will place a significant disadvantage in legal proceedings to small property owners who are trying to evict a problem tenant. A final draft of this ordinance is due back in 120 days (12/14/18); BizFed has written a letter to Council President Wesson describing our opposition and we plan to testify before the council at all meetings where this ordinance will be discussed. We ask all BizFed Members to do the same. Click here to view letter sent to Council President Wesson.

Another Untenable  LA City Housing Mandate

The City of Los Angeles has passed a vague draft ordinance that would require ALL rental housing owners to accept potential tenants that use Section 8 housing vouchers. This draft ordinance goes against property rights for property owners who already keep rents low without subsidies and without cumbersome paperwork. A draft ordinance like this exacerbates the housing crisis, reduces the amount of workforce housing on the market, and does nothing to help families who are working hard to lift themselves out of poverty because it would make housing more expensive. BizFed has written a letter to Council President Wesson describing our opposition and we plan to testify before the council at all meetings where this ordinance will be discussed. We ask all BizFed Members to do the same. Click here to view letter sent to Council President Wesson and other supplement materials.

A COMPLETE Census Count is needed

Our Nation’s founders enshrined in the Constitution a decennial census for all residents of the United States. The 2020 census is projected to count nearly 400 million people and would determine how $76 Billion in Federal funds are allocated to California. The current plan to include a question about citizenship will undermine efforts for an accurate accurate and complete count. BizFed urges the Department of Commerce to withdraw the citizenship question. Reliable and accurate data is a necessary foundation for a well-functioning government and a thriving business sector in the United States. Join BizFed in supporting this effort and imploring the Department of Commerce and Congress to eliminate a potential citizenship question on the 2020 census. BizFed will also be advocating to state and local governments for funding to support a complete count. Click here to view letter sent to the Department of Commerce and other supplement materials.

Congrats to Patty Senecal, WSPA
